DESCRIPTION
Description of the Painting
"William Turner's 'The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons' is a work of art that captures a dramatic moment in British history. This canvas painting depicts the devastating fire that struck the Palace of Westminster in 1834."
What It Represents
The painting shows flames engulfing the historic buildings, with the fire reflecting in the waters of the Thames. The scene is animated by a crowd of stunned spectators watching the fire from the opposite riverbank.
The Colors Used
Turner uses a palette of intense and contrasting colors to convey the heat and fury of the fire. The warm tones of yellow, orange, and red dominate the left side of the painting, while the cool blues and grays of the night sky create a strong contrast, accentuating the dramatic effect of the scene.
